Summer is a time for expressing the joy of life. Just as winter is typified in the expression hygge, all things warm and cuddly, so a typical Mediterranean summer is evocative of wine, music, dance and laughter. My Malta is a shining example of that. At around this time, the grapes start reaching their best in the many vineyards around Malta. Large, luscious, green grapes, small golden round ones, vibrant, mysterious oval orbs. All these shapes and colours nestle almost shyly among the crisp green foliage. Sometimes they remind me of children, boldly in your face one minute and hiding behind their parents the next.

In this special time, the viticulturists prepare for Vendemmia, grape harvest, which will yield the wine for the coming years according to the grape variety. It is this special time which inspired this painting which I entitled; Grapes, she wrought. This is painted on 300gsm cold-pressed Arches paper treated with gesso in parts. This play with textures has resulted in an innovative reaction for the watercolours which has been very pleasing.

Grapes, she wrought is currently on exhibition.
